Protected Landscape Area - Moravian Karst
Moravian Karst is one of the most important karst area of Central Europe. In the area of Moravian Karst, there are more than 1100 caverns and gorges. But only 4 caves of the all number are open to public. There are Punkvevní jeskyně (Punkva Caves) with their underground river – during the cruise you can see there the bottom of the famous Macocha Abyss. Another cave is Kateřinská jeskyně with its unique limestone columns. The Balcarka Cave is full of colorful stalactitic decoration. Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně are made by huge corridors and underground gorges.
Remarkable valleys called Pustý žleb and Suchý žleb are very typical for Moravian Karst; there is also stream called Bílá voda coming into the caves and Amatérská jeskyně which is not open to public. Very remarkable for all visitors is view to Macocha Abyss from two platforms – the Upper and Lower foot bridge. In the central part of Moravian Karst, Rudické propadání is the main place to visit, where river called Jedovnický potok suddenly disappears into the caves and comes out in Býčí skála close to village Josefov after its 12 km long mysterious journey.
Since 1956, due to its extraordinary karst phenomena and precious fauna and flora, the Moravian Karst has been protected area. Already in this year it became the Protected Landscape Area of Moravian Karst.
Moravian Karst - Tourist Information
The Protected Landscape Area (PLA) Moravian Karst has about 92 km2. In summer, we recommend to make a reservation for tickets to caves. Most exposed parts of PLA, valleys called Pustý žleb and Suchý žleb are closed to all car traffic. Instead, there is an ecological public transport – road-trains and cableway.
The part from Skalní mlýn to Punkevní jeskyně is connected by the ecological road-train. From the Punkva Caves train station the cableway goes up to Macocha Abyss Plateau. The train and cableway run in connection with entries to Punkva Caves. You can buy entrance tickets to caves and fare for ecological transport at Information Center in Skalní mlýn. Another way to go there is using coach from Blansko-railway station to Skalní mlýn.
